The Cardinal at North Hills, Tower Expansion | Raleigh, NC
A prominent silhouette in the North Hills skyline, in Raleigh North Carolina, the glorious Cardinal at North Hills - East Tower is an 18-story, 191-unit senior living high-rise. Kisco Senior Living desired to expand the Cardinal at North Hills and to elevate the community to their distinguished nation-wide Signature Communities Series. The inter-connectivity of design elements can be observed throughout the new expansion, providing the resident with an unparalleled living experience. Maintaining the inclusive atmosphere of the community was of high importance; not only between the existing building and the new tower, but also among the mix of residents with different needs and expectations. For example the entrance, amenities and common areas are the same for all residents regardless of their ability or level of care. New venues are for all residents, fostering a sense of community and connection.
A key design element unifying both the existing and new tower communities is the central courtyard, along with the linear dining venue having direct connection to the courtyard with the covered patio. “Bring the outdoors in” became the obvious concept, especially with the expectation of biophlia design and the overall message of wellness and well-being in senior living. The design emphasizes the the outdoors and integration with nature both directly with access to the outdoors, and inside with the use of natural finishes and materials. Wood and stone are mixed with soft organic forms and textures. A 2-story living green wall is the main feature in the lobby and sends a strong message of wellness. The lounge and dining have direct access to the central courtyard, and the large bi-fold windows open the bar to the patio. Large windows on upper floors offer stunning views from 18 stories up, open floor plans welcome in natural light, and all elevator lobbies have windows for continued connection to daylight.
The Tower at Cardinal is an exemplary project of all THW diciplines (architecture, land planning, interiors and purchasing) working together to create beautiful safe homes for our seniors through good, thoughtful design.
